Interview in La Vanguardia
about the global expansion of
La Wash

The newspaper La Vanguardia, recognized graphic and digital media of international scope,
interviewed Javier Llacuna, founder and CEO of La Wash.

The international expansion undertaken by the franchise of self-service laundries La Wash, is explained in the main newspaper of Catalonia and travels the world in its digital version.

Asked about the preparation of the firm to expand the franchise chain in two continents, Javier Llacuna shares the experience of founding the chain of self- service laundries that opens its way in the world.

The business of doing laundry in La Vanguardia

The publication in the morning newspaper of general information reveals the competitive advantages of the business and does so by interviewing an expert in innovation.

Javier Llacuna tells in the interview how he left a successful career at a multinational company to start an innovative way of doing laundry outside the home.

The model of automatic laundry services had not yet been installed in Spanish society when Javier decided to start La Wash.

What began ten years ago with a self-service laundry in the Clot neighborhood of Barcelona is now a laundry franchise with more than 300 establishments in Spain and Portugal.

But it doesn’t end there. Javier Llacuna is already working on expanding into the international market, with the plan to reach fifteen countries by 2026.

As the CEO and founder of La Wash explains, this rapid growth of the firm is possible thanks to the support of the British group Photo-Me, a holding company that acquired the brand in 2018.

In this sense, La Vanguardia echoes the importance of a business model and highlights it in an interview that recognizes the significant growth of an  innovative, profitable and sustainable franchise.

International expansion of La Wash

La Wash se expande en Latinoamérica y Oriente Medio

International expansion of La Wash

With an eye immediately set on Latin
America and the Middle East

The brand that in only a decade conquered the Iberian Peninsula with selfservice laundries, now prepares to expand into the international market in an initial projection of 5 years.

Interviewed by La Vanguardia, the founder of self-service laundries La Wash, Javier Llacuna, expressed his motivation and the prospects for reaching some fifteen countries in Latin America and the Middle East in the near future.

La Wash started with the illusion of having found a business sector which, until then, was not very well exploited in Spain.

Javier Llacuna assures that, in a similar way, he is now preparing to approach the strategic market in two key cities for extra-continental expansion: Mexico and Malta.

From doing laundry in the Clot
neighborhood to running more than
300 laundries

It all began in the Clot neighborhood in Barcelona, with a venture for which Llacuna would invest everything; leaving his professional career at a multinational company, he decided to start his own business.

This is how La Wash started, what today is a chain of self-service laundries
with more than 300 laundries in Spain and Portugal.

Between its own stores and franchises, the company earns millions of euros a year and, in recognition of this successful career, it was acquired by Photo-Me, the holding company that now provides it with the backing to continue
expanding its business.

A sustainable and profitable model

The global growth of the brand does not blur the vision of the first day. Llacuna is still CEO and is responsible for planning this expansion with the goal of reaching 15 countries in just 5 years.

The proposal is simple:

  •  A profitable and flexible franchise model, that easily adjusts to
different types of investors and entrepreneurs.
  • An idea focused on sustainability, as the backbone of the business that saves energy and water to reduce costs, and innovative
biodegradable detergents to minimize environmental impact.
  • A business focused on the profile of young users and
entrepreneurs, promoting the culture of a more responsible
    consumption.

Moving towards new horizons, La Wash is ready to enter Malta with the support of an important investment group, while in Mexico it is also doing so with the support of a local partner.

Meanwhile, in Spain and Portugal, La Wash continues to invest in
R&D
to develop the expansion of innovative formats such as boxes and self-service modules in gas stations and shopping centers.

Washing and drying tips

Consejos de lavado y secado para tus prendas

Washing and drying tips for your clothes

Regardless of the quality of the clothes, many times they deteriorate before not following properly the washing instructions.

Therefore, before putting a washing machine the first thing to do is review the washing instructions to see what products we can use and what not, the washing temperature and whether it is possible or not to use the dryer, among other factors.

From La Wash we offer some washing and drying tips for your clothes

Washing tips

Once we have cleared the way in which we must wash the garments, it is worth adopting certain precautions to guarantee a greater durability of the clothes.

For example, if we are going to wash clothes that form a set, it is better to wash them and dry them at the same time, in this way we avoid that they lose color unevenly.

The zippers are the cause of damage to multiple garments, to avoid anything as easy as putting clothes in the washing machine with zippers closed.

In addition, if it is a matter of washing delicate garments, it is advisable to do it inside a special cover for washing and even inside a pillow or cushion cover.

Drying tips

At the time of putting the dryer we must bear in mind that it is not necessary to take the precaution of separating the clothes by colors, we can mix the white clothes with the clothes of color without any problem.

To prevent clothes from becoming too wrinkled and the wear and tear associated with continued use of the dryer, it is best not to overload it, to allow clothes to have room to move inside the dryer drum.

In this sense, it is better to group garments by weight since the more a garment weighs, the longer it takes to dry. Another way to avoid excessive wrinkling is to remove it from the dryer as soon as the drying program is finished.

Finally, do not forget to refrain from putting clothes that carry some type of rubber, filled with foam or plastic that can deteriorate due to the heat of the dryer.

La Wash, the easiest way to wash quilts

Your quilts will hardly fit in the domestic washing machine and they take a long time to dry, even if you have room to hang out them.

Wash your quilts in La Wash self-service laundries

Your quilts will hardly fit in the domestic washing machine and they take a long time to dry, even if you have room to hang out them.

Do not overthink, La Wash is the easiest way to wash your quilts.

Se avecina el cambio de temporada y, con ello, la habitual rutina doméstica de cambiar las prendas de abrigo por unas más livianas, habrá que higienizar los grandes textiles de la casa y guardarlas hasta el otoño, como mínimo.

The change of season is approaching and, with it, the usual domestic routine of changing the outerwear for lighter ones, it will be necessary to sanitize the large textiles of the house and keep them until autumn, at least.

Well, even when the days are somewhat longer, warmer and the weather is drier, washing the quilts is usually a tedious and laborious task.

Solve the washing of quilts in 3 steps

The size of the washing machine: When it comes to domestic washing machines, the first appears when trying to put the quilt in the washing machine.

In La Wash self-service laundries, the machines are industrial equipment, with larger dimensions and a better result in deep cleaning.

According to the establishment closest to your home, you can find washing machines with capacity for 9, 10, 15 and up to 19 kg ( 20, 22, 33 and up to 42 lb.).

Stains and traces of soap: normal, the load of the domestic washing machine is so tight that it does not perform well the task of rinsing and spinning, so it does not eliminate the stains of use and can even be marked with traces of soap.

In the washing machines of La Wash, in addition to the washing capacity, you can choose the most suitable program for the type of fabric, avoiding that the piece suffers from lack of rinsing, inadequate temperatures or centrifugation at incompatible speeds.

At the same time, you avoid overloading the domestic washing machine, which can be broken due to the effort that the drum makes to work with these large and heavy parts.

Place and time of drying: drying an outdoor a quilt requires a lot of time, space and effort. It is impossible to do it on the floor.

Like any piece with a coat stuffed, quilts lose their shape by drying them hanging on a cord. The ideal situation is to dry them on a horizontal surface and remove them to avoid caking the filling in some corners.

Do the math of following all these steps with each of the family quilts!

In La Wash self-service laundries, you take dry quilts in 1 hour.

Drying machines have a capacity of 15 kg (33 lb.). Use the low or medium temperature drying program for quilts and other stuffed garments (if filling is synthetic) and take the quilt ready for storage until next season.

Washing symbols

Washing symbols

How to decrypt the wash symbols

Textile conservation labeling is a very useful tool to take care of all clothes, so it is important to decipher the washing symbols before putting the washing machine.

For a long time, all garments have on the label a number of symbols that inform how to wash them, how to dry them and whether or not it is possible to iron them or use bleach.

This code of graphic symbols for the labeling of textiles is approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), according to the recommendations of the Groupement International pour l’Etiquetage d’Entretien des Textiles, and they are inscribed in a precise order on the labels.

Some key precisions about the symbols of the label

While there are many people who fail to follow these specifications, after this article you may decide or declines the purchase of a garment according to the symbols you see on your label.

Maybe you already have some experience shrunken, faded garments, stains dyed by other garments, wrinkles impossible to eliminate, garments that have no remedy …

Well, for washing, there are the following symbols on the label:

  • A bucket indicates that aqueous washing is allowed.
  • If the bucket is crossed out, the press cannot be wetted or washed with water.
  • If the cell carries a number inside, it indicates the maximum temperature in degrees centigrade.
  • The buckets can also present points: If there is 1 point inside the bucket, the maximum temperature is 30 °, if there are 2 points it is 40 °, if there are 3 points it is 50 °, 4 points is 60 °, 5 points is 70 ° and if there are 6 the maximum temperature can exceed 95 ° without damaging the fabric.
  • If the tray has a hand inside, it indicates that the garment must be washed by hand.
  • If the tray has a horizontal line below, it indicates that washing and bleaching can be done in a washing machine.
  • If there are two lines below the bucket, the wash program should be soft.

For the treatment with bleach, which should always be done in cold water, the indications are in a triangle:

  • If the triangle is crossed out, bleach or any other type of bleach cannot be used.
  • If the triangle is empty, any type of bleach, including bleach, can be used.
  • If the letters CL appear inside the triangle, chlorine bleach can be used.
  • If the triangle has parallel lines, any oxygen-based bleach can be used.

To pass the clothes through the dryer, the indicative of the label is a square:

  • A square with a circle indicates that the dryer can be used at normal temperature.
  • If the circle is completely filled in black, or the square is crossed out, the garment does not accept a dryer.
  • If there is 1 point in the inner circle, the dryer must be used at a low temperature.
  • If there are 2 points on the inner circle, the temperature may be high.
  • If there is a line below the dryer symbol, the drying program for delicate or cold clothes should be used.
  • If a square or curved line appears in the square, drying must be done outdoors, without a dryer.
  • When the square has diagonal lines in a corner, it should be dried outdoors and in the shade.
  • When there are 3 vertical lines in the square, the garment should be dried outdoors and on hangers, smoothing by hand.

The symbols of dry cleaning, on the other hand, are represented by a circle and the inner letters represent the solvent that the garment admits.

Consider each of these recommendations on labeling to preserve the textiles before taking the clothes to the laundromat, so you ensure you properly separate the garments and choose the washing and drying programs indicated to take care of them.

The financial plan of the franchisee

The financial plan of the franchisee

The financial plan of the future franchisee

Opening a business always implies assuming a series of initial expenses in order to start the business activity. At the time of entering into a franchise must be borne in mind that the entrepreneur not only must pay the typical royalties and royalties of entry, but also must deal with other types of expenses that are linked to the opening of any business type.

The most common are the following:

Royalties and entry fees

They are the amounts demanded by the franchisors to their new franchisees. The franchise contract usually specifies the destination of these amounts (training, advice, etc.). However, La Wash does not require this initial payment or royalties.

Store place deposit

If the entrepreneur does not have his own place to set up the business he must resort to a rent, in this case he must bear in mind that the initial outlay will include not only the month of rent but also the payment of the deposit.

Conditioning works

Finding a place in the right place and meeting the necessary requirements to set up the desired business is not always easy. In fact, in the great majority of cases it is necessary to carry out a series of reforms so that the local can host the business that will be assembled. This implies not only the own expenses of the work (masonry, plumbing, etc.) but also the payment of the corresponding municipal taxes and building permit.

Constitution of the mercantile society

Despite being part of a franchise, it is necessary that the franchisee make his business take the form of a legal entity, so the relationship with the franchisor is not a boss-employee relationship but a company-company relationship. This implies a series of administrative costs.
